Untitled

Sometimes I feel like all the embarrassing things to be endured are stockpiled in my destiny. Seriously, who else trips on nothing, rips her right jean knee, scrapes two toes and has askaris laughing at her in a public place that shall not be named. And the askaris are laughing not because she fell but because she attempted matrix moves during her fall in order to save her ipod. Well, ha ha, I didn't scratch the screen, so there. And even better, my pants didn't split down the middle so I'm OK....

ANYWAY,

When I'm not being ridiculously accident prone, I like to inform people that my mother has rebelled against the t.v. She threatened to do this back in 2000 but then she bought one and it was big and pretty. But apparently it destroyed what was left of our humanity morphing us into evil robots who refuse to cook, clean or kneel to great elders.

Moving was her chance. She sold the t.v. off and when we got here decided not to buy a new one. The worst part is she is winning. Like, really, winning. My sisters are actually opening books and wait for it.....reading them...no thats not it, keep waiting...beyond the first three chapters! As if that's not enough, when my sisters and I talk to each other, the conversation no longer dissolves into an argument, muttered curses, tears after two minutes. We now talk and, even this blows my mind, enjoy each other's company. And I, have started walking. Yes, it is to walk to my aunt/friend/grandmother 's house to watch t.v. but as far as the madre is concerned, one small step for me, one giant step for healthy living.

It is horrible (Apart from all the good stuff, above). Like after supper, there's nothing to do so we sleep. By 10pm, everyone is in their bed. Truly. And because we slept early, we wake up early and since the rest of the world owns a t.v., at 6am, they are still in dreamland, wondering what the ____ we are doing awake. Horrible.

I really miss t.v. I miss making fun of Rachel K. I miss shuddering with revulsion at Straka's outfits. I miss cartoons, Disney channel, Nickelodeon, Boomerang. I miss pretending to be too intellectual to watch MTV but secretly timing Sweet Sixteen.I do not care that there was a time before t.v.s and people survived fine. Yes they did. Its OK when you have no idea what you are missing. But if you do, if you know that at this moment on E! they are talking about Sweet Baby Suri's first fart and you are missing it....Too painful to even think about....too painful to even type anymore.......

....OK, I'm not honestly that sad about not having a t.v. at home. What I need I get on DVD, like Heroes. I just thought I'd try that speech on anyone else who starts talking about Big Brother Africa. I figure they will be more than eager to change the subject to something other than t.v....

...I am a teensy weesny bit bitter about missing High School Musical 2, but thats it, promise....

Yay! Another TV-free person!

Trust me, you will become more interesting without the gawk box. Your conversation will no longer begin with "Last night on telly" and you will be able to present reasonable, well thought through arguments without the influence of 'pundits' on TV. And you will become more thoughtful, your attention span will increase, you'll have time for exercise, you'll lose a few pounds ...

@Tumwijuke: Ditto.
Me, living without the cube wasn't a choice. But once I started living without it, I discovered the stuff beyond a couch-potato's life. :o) 'Tis actually fun. Plus, that way, the Americans have a harder time feeding I and I on propaganda .. ;o)

Y.z, you make it sound tempting, but I don't believe you.

Even though there is absolutely nothing at all at ____ing all to watch on TV at all ever! I insist on the principle.

I think if the volume is off it is less iniquitous to watch TV.
