Secretly Falling Apart, Unseen
She glanced up at the night sky. A clear one, no clouds and the stars were bright, so bright compared to the black behind them. The moon was a gash of silver, like someone had slashed the sky, one quick slash. He gazed at the grasshoppers dancing beneath the security light. Brown, and green, the colours of their bodies flashed in front of his eyes hypnotizing him. She turned back towards him and tucked her head in his chest enveloping herself in the scent of him. He felt her move in his arms and he tightened them a little unwilling to let go but she was just settling so he froze as she did, letting her be. With her face tucked neatly in his chest, she was enveloped in his smell; spicy, man, and a hint of Omo. She smiled wryly at the thought. The soft cotton of his shirt was a nice contrast against the hard planes of his chest and at this thought she turned her head slightly and flattened her cheek against him. His response was to bring his head to rest gently on the top of hers. He felt her move again, pressing her cheek against his chest and he was silently amazed by how soft she was. He rested his head on top of her head and looked back at the grasshoppers. She could hear his heartbeat now, steady. She closed her eyes and let the beat fill her until hers had slowed to match his. She breathed with him, her eyes squeezed shut. He smiled as he felt her breath slow, the rise and fall of her chest in synchrony with his. His eyes never left the grasshoppers and their dance. She imagined how they must look. He imagined how they must look. Wrapped in each other’s arms like that, like they’d never let go. Any other night it would have embarrassed them both but tonight they held each other and didn’t rush the moment. In the distance, a boda boda zoomed past.
